Copy Shops in China: Printing, Scanning and WeChat Files
TL;DR — the 30-second version
You can do a print job in China entirely from your phone. Walk into any print shop (da yin dian — “print shop”), send the file over WeChat, say how many pages and which sides, and the whole thing costs a few yuan. The only habit worth building: turn everything into a PDF before you send it.
The short answer
The short answer: yes, printing in Chinese cities is cheap, fast, and runs on WeChat plus PDFs rather than USB sticks and email. A stack of black-and-white pages usually costs one to five yuan (about USD 0.15-0.70), with a ten-minute turnaround.

Find a shop: they are everywhere
Small print shops cluster where paperwork happens — university gates, metro exits, and the blocks around district government offices. You’ll meet two kinds: plain print shops that copy, print, and scan, and graphic shops (tu wen dian) that bind, laminate, and do posters. University areas are cheapest and most honest, and many stay open past 10 PM during exam season. Search Baidu Maps for the Chinese words for “print shop” and take the nearest one with decent reviews.
For visa paperwork, walk toward the government building instead. Streets around any district office are dense with shops whose staff file those forms daily — they know what the bureau wants before you do.
The WeChat handoff
Most shops now run off phone files. The flow we use every time: save the document into WeChat (send it to File Transfer Assistant or to yourself), walk in, scan the QR code on the counter, and the file lands on their computer. Staff handle the rest — you point at a page count, they print.
Older shops still take AirDrop, a USB stick, or email. Payment is whatever you carry — WeChat Pay, Alipay, or cash.
PDF first, always
Your Word file will reflow on their machine. Most shops run WPS Office, the Chinese suite with different fonts and page metrics, so a .docx can come out with broken lines and an extra page. Convert before sending: open the file on your phone and pick “export as PDF” — WPS, Microsoft Office, and most viewers have the button. If you can’t convert, check the first page on their screen before they print the batch.
Check the page count, then ask for double-sided: da shuangmian (dǎ shuāngmiàn — “print double-sided”). For anything over three pages it’s the default and the cheapest habit in Chinese printing.
What one page costs
Rough numbers from our own receipts in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Chengdu: black-and-white A4 runs about 0.1-0.2 yuan a side, color lands between 1 and 2 yuan, a scan around 0.5-1 yuan, and a whole job — 30 pages or a bound report — under 10 yuan. Prices drift, and they get cheaper the closer you get to a university.
Watch for the minimum, though. Some shops charge a flat floor (1 yuan, sometimes 5) for jobs under a handful of pages. Ask the price before a big batch.
Paper size traps
A4 is the default, but Chinese official forms sometimes print on 16 kai (about 184 x 260 mm), a slightly squarer sheet that a standard A4 tray will not take. If a form must keep its exact size — notarization paperwork, school registration — tell the staff “16 kai” and they’ll load the right paper.
Photo printing is its own trade. Chinese visa photos are 35 x 45 mm on white, and shops shoot, crop, and print them for a few yuan up to about 20 for a sheet of eight. Two tips: ask for the digital copy sent back to your WeChat (most will), and bring a photo taken against a plain white wall to skip their instant camera.
Phrasebook that actually works
Four phrases cover almost every counter in China:
da yin (dǎ yìn) — to print
da shuangmian (dǎ shuāngmiàn) — print double-sided
sao miao (sǎo miáo) — to scan
zhengjian zhao (zhèngjiàn zhào) — ID photo
Point at the file on the screen, say the pinyin, and the staff will usually finish the rest of the conversation for you.
Quick answers
Q: Can I print from my phone without a USB stick? A: Yes, that’s the normal way. Send the file to yourself in WeChat, scan the shop’s QR code at the counter, and the file appears on their computer.
Q: How much does printing cost in China? A: Typically 0.1-0.2 yuan per black-and-white A4 side and 1-2 yuan per color page. A full bound job usually stays under 10 yuan.
Q: Do copy shops take WeChat Pay or Alipay? A: Routinely, and cash when needed. Nobody has ever refused any of the three in our experience.
Q: My file is a Word document — is that a problem? A: Convert it to PDF first. Word files reflow in WPS Office and come out with shifted fonts and page counts.
